Top 10 Recession Proof Jobs
Posted by Stephen Cline on October 14th, 2008With the current economic conditions a lot of people may start to wonder about their job security. Already there is a lot of ‘advisers’ telling dissatisfied employees to find a new job before they quit their current one,so I thought it would be a great time to take a look at some of the most recession proof jobs.
Obviously it is different for everyone based on their own circumstances, as one person who is in a job that would be considered high risk in relation to recessions may successfully keep his job, while others who hold one of the 10 positions below may find themselves out of work.
But here are my picks for the top recession proof jobs.
The Top 10 Recession Proof Jobs
- Nursing
Even during economic hardship life goes on. People get injured. people get pregnant. There are still accidents and all the other reasons people visit hospitals. - Accounting
Just because times are getting tougher doesn’t mean that people don’t need accountants. The increase in demand for accountants can be blamed on tougher accounting and auditing regulations, making this one of the most recession proof jobs. - Education
Kid’s need to be taught no matter what is going on with the economy, so teachers are also quite safe when it comes to job security. However location may play a part in where the jobs are located.
- Software Design & Development
According to the US Department of Labour, software design and development industry is set to be one of the fastest growing jobs through to 2016! - Administration Assistants
As living expenses increase, it is getting harder to live on less. Which is why there is always a need for administration assistants. As current administration assistants retire or move onto higher paid jobs they need to be replace. - Green Jobs
Until we counteract the effects that we have had on the earth there will be a need for environmental scientists and other ‘green jobs’ to tackle problems such as global warming. - Police
Crime doesn’t stop as times get harder. In fact it usually gets worse. There will always be a need for police officers. - Security
Just like with the police, but as more people become unemployed crime increases which is why business’ will look at hiring more security staff to monitor their business premises. - Aged Care
Our aging population will need a lot of support and this will not change even during economic hardship. - Funeral Services
The sad fact of life is that people die. It doesn’t matter whether its the middle of a boom or recession, there will always be a need for funeral services – especially with the aging population.
After a bit of research and nice little brain storming session that is the top 10 recession proof jobs that I could think of.
If you can think or anything else, or just have a comment on this post I’d love to hear your thoughts. So please leave a comment below!
Jobs to do with utilities – water, electricity, gas, also waste disposal etc look pretty safe. And you can be sure that the folk in your local tax office will still be there next week.

I like the idea of thinking about recession proof jobs,
At first, I would have put ahead some jobs you can’t deal without : Education, policemen, but transports too (my field of study). But here is a paradox : you need to provide people with cars, furnitures, food, stuff like that and see now how companies dealing with car manufacturing, agriculture, factories in general are dying from outsourcing and redundancy…..
The only thing that continues to grow fast is entertainment, movies, video games, nightlife venues, so even if you loose your job, don’t worry your life will still keep being funny.
P.S : If someone have even the slightest idea of how all this hell’s supposed to end, please leave a message !
Good luck and congratulation for your web site.
the economic recession made a lot of workers jobless. my best friend and me lost our jobs because of job cuts. i hope that our economy would recover soon.
Our country had been so much affected by this Economic Recession. there are lots of job cuts and company shutdowns. We are seeing some signs of economic recovery right now and we hope that it would continue.
:
I think we are also seeing some signs of recovery from the Economic Recession. Of course, we have no idea of how long it will take to completely recover, but some say it’s going to be longer than for the other recessions in decades. I also scanned an article yesterday that said business owners need a new set of tactics to do well during recovery.
