Drawing up support for the economic stimulus
Posted by Stephen Cline on February 20th, 2010President Obama and VP Joe Biden are on a spree to drum up support among Americans for the economic stimulus and its encouraging effects. They are at pains to convince the people that the economic stimulus had a rather good effect on the economy and prevented it from lapsing into a Great Depression like in the 1930s. They want to tell people that these efforts have been able to save millions of jobs and households that had almost given up hope. While the unemployment rate is still at around 10%, it seems that what is being said that but for the economic stimulus, the unemployment rate would have been much higher and that the rate of failure of companies would have skyrocketed.
While the US economy is certainly not out of the woods, it is quite true that the situation could have been much worse, but for the economic stimulus. But people who have lost jobs and are without jobs will be less than convinced by all this pep talk. It is tough for someone who is jobless and has mouths to feed, to take the word of macro-economic growth and development, when you stare at a bleak future yourself. This is something that the President and his team should realize fast.
